OMG!! I experienced my first hug-a-thon... last Friday night (7-11-08) at the Pioneer Courthouse Square. I went with my friend, Alder, her daughter and met two others downtown. What a cool and amazing experience! After two hours I was wiped but felt incredibly charged at the same time. Donned with our printed "Free Hugs" tee-shirts and our matching signs I was amazed with the variety of responses from people.
Some wouldn't even make eye contact, several would smile and say "No thanks" as they kept in stride to their step. There were a few that made a beeline straight toward us with arms open wide from across the street or the other side of the square. MANY wanted to know what the "catch" was, what we got out of it or how we might try to hook them into some obligation before allowing any contact to be made. Some came back for seconds, and what shouldn't surprise me was that many really just needed a hug and took advantage of our offer with open hearts.
I can't wait to do this again!! There was only one creepy guy that tried to make more of the offer but wasn't a threat beyond being told to move on since we were offering "hugs only!"
I've told everyone about it and my 20 year old son sounds mildly interested in joining us the next time. I think it's possible that he's only thinking of getting hugged by all the "hot chicks" but I'm hoping he participates and gains some of the valuable warm fuzzies of compassion that I got!
Cayce ;-D

My favorites are the ones who insist that there must be a catch. They really expect you to tell them about Jesus or some such thing.
